Abstract
In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the strong inflation starting in 2022 as a result of theattacking war against Ukraine, growing social (income) inequalities were worried about. On the basis of the longitudinal data of the Values in Crisis study, the question of how well or poorly the respondents managed with their household income during the crisis(es) was investigated and a typology of the subjective financial situation was developed. The types financially secure, winners, precarious, losers and changers were differentiated. Classical class characteristics - education and gender - play the expected role for the belonging to those types who constantly report a secure versus a precarious financial situation during the pandemic. Those types who perceived a change in their financial situation report different degrees of economic consequences of the pandemic. Although Austria succeeded in securing a relative stability of the financial situation for a majority,(longer-term) economic consequences could probably not be mitigated to the same extent for all social groups.
