Abstract
At the beginning the different aspects of winter tourism in the Austrian Alps are introduced.
These include the history, statistical data, infrastructure, touristy trends and the
contribution of winter tourism to global warming. That followed the past and the expected
climate changes in the European Alps by means of the categories temperature, precipitations
and snow are argued. Subsequently the economical and partly also the ecological
effects of global warming on the winter tourism are researched. On the basis of these
conclusions the areas of activity for politics and public organisations are presented. Especially
the areas of urban and regional planning as well as the common transport policy
are essentially in this connection. In addition strategies for sustainable winter tourism are
shown. As a case study for the successful realisation of gentle mobility the concept of
the community Werfenweng is presented. The papers ends with a critique, as besides
the climate change also other factors of influence will be determining for the future of
winter tourism in Austria.
