Abstract
Component composition (aggregation) and decomposition are often considered as two sides of the same
coin. This article shows that two types of whole-part relationships, one based on composition and the other
based on decomposition can be used beneficially to model temporal and spatial relationships of multimedia
data. The properties of these relationships are discussed and it is shown how they can be embedded into the
content layer of a hypermedia database management system.
