Wavelet compression of 3D ultrasound data

Abstract

In this paper we describe a project which has been realized in cooperation with the company Kretztechnik AG, which is one of the worlds leaders in development and manufacturing of ultrasonographic systems for medical diagonstics. This company wants to submit three dimensional ultrasound data sets via networks for telediagnostics in reasonable times. Due to the large size of a 3D ultrasound data set it is not possible to submit the data uncompressed. In this paper we describe a wavelet based algorithm for the compression of 3D ultrasound data sets. Numerical examples achieved with our compression algorithm are presented and the results are evaluated from a medical point of view.
