Abstract
The political discussion on changing transport activities from private cars to environmentally more compatible alternatives, such as public transport systems or cycling, has been primarily focussed on technical aspects. Up to now it has been widely neglected that selceting a certain transportion mean primarily represents a personal decision-making process, embracing a subjective evaluation of different transportion qualities. Therefore scientific behavioral models and investigations might give us essential indications of those traffic measures which are highly effective for a modal shift in passengers transport. Recent behavioral studies demonstrate that measures reducing the differences in time spent and comfort between public transport, cycling and private car use form main basis of an environmentally orientated traffic policy.
