    Abstract

First of all, this paper discusses the various perspectives on a product’s life cycle. Secondly, the most popular methods of product assessment in Austria are being presented and critically discussed. Not surprisingly, the differences between the respective methods are as high as the differences in the views of the product life cycle are. But there is no such thing as “the best” method for assessing a product’s value. In fact, every method has its ideal field of application, where it definitely has advantages compared to the others. To assess not only the ecological but also economical effects of a product, the isolated methods always need to be applied in combination since they can only measure one perspective. Completing the theoretical discussion, the paper ends with an assessment of the product paper with the methods eco-indicator 99, output costing and eco-efficiency-analysis. The result was that the eco-efficiency-analysis is a useful tool for assessing the integrated value of a product. In contrast to the recent academic discussion about this topic, the practical implementation in companies and politics lacks by far behind.
