    Abstract

The dramatic increase in the use of automobiles in our society cannot serve as a model for a sustainable future due to the damage to the natural and social environment caused by the predominating traffic system. The climate change, the increasing consumption of natural ressources and the enlarging destruction of the biosphere point out that a fundamental change in ecomonic and social structures is necessary. According to this, the bicycle as a non-polluting and municipal beneficial means of transport can make an important contribution. Therefore it is urgent to promote the bicycle use with a mixture of pull and push measures. In this paper these measures were applied on the city of Linz. If they were put into practice, a reduction of the social costs caused by traffic in Linz would result.
