Abstract
In the past the efforts of solving the environmental problems caused by the transportation sector have been primarily focussed on technical measures, whereas structural improvements have been pursued only at certain points. Apart from the longterm effects of structural measures to reduce traffic volume in particular a progressive modal shift to environmentally more compatible transportation means could bring about remarkable ecological relief. An essential precondition of switching transportation activities from private cars to public transport systems or cycling consists in identifying and finally in meeting the persons mobility demands. Recent behavioral studies demonstrate that measures reducing the differences in time spent and comfort between private car use and the environmentally more friendly alternatives form the main base of an extended modal shift.
