abstract = "We report on the development of a novel non-invasive ultrasonic measurement system for the determination of the melting behaviour in a single screw plastification unit (35/20D). The solid bed - melt pool ratio is quantified with a non-invasive ultrasonic system based on reflection measurements. By automated analysis of the reflected pulses - measured at different axial positions - it is possible to monitor the melting process online. Additionally the melt profile was also calculated with the single screw calculation program NeExt (Numerically extended extruder calculation) and compared with the measurement results.",
