Usability evaluation of accessible games: The adaption of the heuristic evaluation for games designed for all

Abstract

Many efforts have been made in the last years to bring games accessibility to the mainstream. This starts from guidelines to research projects to accessible game development . All these research activities ask for accessibility testing. A very cost efficient and highly recommended method is the Heuristic Evaluation by Jakob Nielsen. At this kind of evaluation, a group of three to eight experts evaluates an application against ten rules, so called heuristics. The evaluators create a report and prioritise the issues found. This paper will show which of these ten heuristics are useable in testing accessible games. Additional and alternative heuristics, which are necessary for testing accessible games, have been developed. This paper proposes a set of heuristics to standardise accessibility tests. The application of the heuristics to test the usability of an accessible game helps in discussing the usefulness of the approach. Finally, the paper will give an overview to other activities in mainstream game accessibility.
