Abstract

We investigate the update rate for channel estimation in time-varying channels for UMTS-HSDPA. Our channel estimator is based on correlation of the received chip stream and the known pilot stream. This results in an averaging of the estimated channel over a block. First, we investigate the influence of the update rate by averaging over the perfectly known channel at the receiver. This corresponds to the upper bound for block averaging. Second, we examine the throughput by averaging over correlation based channel estimation. We find specific update rates for the ITU-channel models PB3, VA30, and VA120 [1] in combination with RAKE reception or LMMSE equalization for 16-QAM symbol constellation.
