Abstract
This thesis deals with the following problem. Should one or more companies run a disposal facility in order to treat their waste in order to reduce the costs and emissions resulting from waste disposal. First, the current situation of waste management in Austria is shown. The reader is introduced to the relevant legislation regarding waste disposal. The effects of the existing law on waste management are explained. This is followed by an introduction to the most common disposal methods, their advantages, disadvantages and costs. These methods are landfilling, waste incineration and mechanical biological treatment (MBT).
With the facts described in the contents above, it is shown that a single or multiple company operated disposal facility is best run as an MBT. For that reason we compare the costs and emissions for such an MBT with central communal operated landfills, incinerators and MBT. By linking the ecological an economical data an overview is created which can help in finding a solution for the problem dealt within this paper.
