Abstract
The globalization of the markets leads to an increase in freight traffic, especially in heavy goods vehicles. This diploma thesis examines the situation of Austrian freight traffic as well as the effects of freight traffic on our environment and demonstrates the problem solving potential of alternative fuels. A particular emphasis is put on biodiesel made of waste oils and fats (recycled frying oil methyl ester or RFO-ME). In this context an estimation of the Austrian collection potential for waste cooking oils is performed. RFO-ME, biodiesel made from rapeseed oil and fossil diesel fuel are compared in a life cycle assessment in order to show the ecological pros and cons of the three alternatives. Economic aspects of the production and use of RFO-ME are also examined. The operational experience of a company that uses RFO-ME completes the diploma thesis.
