Abstract
The long term storage of digital information is one of the huge challenges for the currently evolving information society. In the same way the information density on storage media increased in the last centuries, the durability of that media decreased. While medieval books lasted for centuries, CD-ROMs only last for several years.
Several concepts for long term preservation of digital information exist. The most acknowledged of these is the concept of a 'Trusted Digital Repository', which is base on the 'Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System' (OAIS).
For the development of long term preservation solutions the guidelines for a 'Trusted Digital Repository' have to be taken into account.
Furthermore the systems developed have to fit into the work flows defined in the OAIS model.
This work develops the architecture and the design of a software system that fullfills these requirements. To archive this the OAIS model was analysed using standard object oriented software development methods. Dynamic and static system models were developed and are shown in UML diagrams. Four examples of system extensions are given to show the flexibility of the design. Although a basic system design could be derived from the OAIS specification the OAIS model has some shortcomings. This work shows that there is a clear need for additional specifications for the design of OAIS conform archives.
