Abstract

This paper attempts to indentify the commonalities of three design theories TRIZ, multi-criteria design optimization (MCDO), and the independence axiom (IA) of Suh’s axiomatic design theory. There is the obvious commonality between TRIZ and MCDO that both emphasize the trade-off character of design problems. MCDO may help to provide quantitative information for applying TRIZ to find better solution concepts via invention. The commonality between MCDO and IA is that it is advantageous to keep the problem dimension as low as possible. Main results of this paper are methods how MCDO results can be used for dimension reduction and for an elucidation of the relations between design parameters and the functional requirements.
