Theoretical analysis of a piezo-electro-hydraulic latch for valve actuation

Abstract

A principle of a piezo-electric controlled hydraulic latch for triggering the switching of on-off valves and its performance analyses by simple mathematical models is presented. Those valves get the energy for switching motions by hydraulic feedback of the valve output pressure. The latch has to stabilize the initially unstable multivibrator. The latch employs a well-known hydraulic principle to catch the valve spool when it is close to one of its end positions, the piezo-actuator pushes the spool out of the latch influence zone. The analyses show that the main functional performance criteria cannot be sufficiently adjusted to acceptable values. A design modification is proposed to overcome this deficiency.
