Abstract

It might come as a surprise that dropping one of the distributive laws from a set of axioms does usually result in meaningful and useful new algebraic structures. In this way, (semi-)near-rings, (semi-)near-fields, composition rings, and the like arise. We discuss the main properties and the most striking applications.
