Abstract
In this article we describe an integrated, fully digital control concept for a linear drive nicknamed "Smalve" (="SMArt vaLVE"). Some problems with state of the art implementations of digital servo control in hydraulic drives are illuminated and alternative implementations are proposed.
To develop this integrated controller, we will first derive a mathematical model of the proportional solenoid valve and then discuss controller design for the valve and drive. Finally experimental data is shown to compare conventional control strategies to the integrated control concept.
