Abstract

The functionality of modern industrial production processes and of its related production systems becomes more and more voluminous and manifold, and hence more complex. This applies especially to systems with a strong mechatronic nature, i.e. with a strong interaction of components from different engineering areas. The higher functionality and complexity tends to result in systems and products, which are difficult to understand and to explain and, consequently, which require higher effort in the overall engineering and design process. The superior and crucial question is how to cope with and handle this steadily increasing functionality and complexity.
