Abstract
The research establishes the quantity as well as the causes and forms of dropping out of academic studies at the University of Linz. The global drop-out ratio is established by analyzing data provided by the university administration. A second essential part of the research strategy employed questionnaires (standardized postal interview) to interview the dropouts. The research results offer a detailed description of the structural attributes of dropouts, their respective paths to academic studies, and their motivation to choose specific majors, as well as a representation of the external and academic conditions surrounding the former students' studies, followed by a detailed analysis of the various forms and causes of dropping out in the context of these structural and situational variables.
