Abstract
This study focuses on strategy processes in small and medium enterprises in the manufacturing sector in Austria. The strategy processes of fifteen successful small and medium enterprises are the main base for the creation of a process model. The generated model provides the possibility for comparison with strategy processes in large enterprises. Furthermore, it points out the specific aspects of small enterprises, smaller medium enterprises and larger medium enterprises.

Conclusion: Strategic management is no universal remedy; the same is true for any other method of management. However a number of useful concepts, methods and instruments are offered by strategic management which may be advantageous for initiating and realising strategies which promise success in small and medium enterprises. During the growth of enterprises the meaning of strategic management and its concepts, methods and instruments changes and develops from the (potential) support of smaller enterprises to the (obligatory) condition of larger medium enterprises. “Entrepreneurial enterprises” take the leading role in using methods and instruments. They use them at an earlier stage and in a more intense way than “conservative living enterprises“.
