Abstract
For multivariable plants the denominator assignment problem and a tracking design based on polynomial matrices are presented. The crucial numerical operations are the calculation of a coprime factorization and the spectral factorization over polynomial matrices. For this, the calculation of the Smith form and the Smith-McMillan must be carried out. The numerical problems of an arithmetic based on polynomials are discussed. With the introduction of an interval arithmetic the obstacles are avoided and a numerical stable way is offered. Two applications will demonstrate this fact
