Abstract
Urban areas have emerged to locations of human interactions with loads of
movements and commuting of individuals, e.g. daily commuting for travelling to and
from work. Additionally, individual mobility and transport have gained importance, as
nowadays, mobility is also coupled with economic, environmental and social
importance. This throws up the question, how mobility needs can be fulfilled in the
case of urbanization. How can a transportation system operate adequately?
Smart mobility can be seen as a promising strategy to cope with several problems
emerging through mobility and transportation wishes and needs, as it implies the
local and international accessibility, innovative and safe transport systems and the
use of information and communication technologies.
Therefore, this master thesis handles the topic of smart mobility as a policy concept
for sustainable passenger transportation with a special focus on implementation
approaches in selected European countries (Sweden, the Netherlands and Austria).
Additionally, effective strategies set by the European Union and national
governments for a more sustainable mobility, or rather smart mobility, are presented.
