In this paper, we compare the performance of a single carrier system with frequency domain equalization (SC/FDE) with an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system as described in the Hiperlan/2 and IEEE 802.11a standards. We give an explanation of the SC/FDE concept which proves to have a couple of similarities to OFDM systems. We present bit error simulation results for the implemented SC/FDE system for uncoded as well as for channel-coded data in typical indoor multipath environments. Our results indicate that the proposed concept achieves similar bit error rate performance as a Hiperlan/2 or IEEE 802.11a like OFDM system, while the analog hardware requirements are much more moderate compared to OFDM systems.
