Abstract
This publication discusses critically the evaluation of sustainability by indicators in the con text of benchmarking of regions and shows opportunities and proceedings for the application of regional sustainability-benchmarking as instrument for the measurement of sustainability oriented strategic performance. The first chapter mentions the importance of measuring sustainable development and points the purpose of sustainability indicators as well as the level of their development. The second chapter argues the increasing meaning of regions for reaching sustainability targets and the necessity for a systematic and continuous training of competences for the realization of sustainability oriented regional processes in a regional context. Chapter 3 presents the instrument of regional sustainability-benchmarking and describes its limitations and possibilities.
