Abstract

We discuss the general objectives and the design of baseic mechanisms for managing resource sharing in a heterogeneous distributed environment. Given the need for simple, safe use of the computing and communication facilities present on the network, the proposed environment should assist the user in submitting requests to the distributed system in a transparent way. The user should not need specific knowledge of hardware and software architectures available or of the mechanisms for their activation and execution. As a specific example, we will focus our attention on the remote execution of processes, with the aim to balance the load on the system and minimize the mean execution time. The REBELS system is described and implementation issues based on the use of Java technology are also addressed.
