Abstract

It is an indisputable fact that different products and projects require different design and engineering processes. But what are the essential criteria to select the best approach? In order to treat this question and to extend the application of an existing process model, this paper discusses criteria for product and project classification and introduces a classification matrix to provide a pre-development guideline for the emphasis on the different phases of a process model based on the phases of VDI 2221. The classification criteria will help the project management to define customized process models, to communicate and motivate it against all involved persons and especially to foster the understanding of rocess model relevance for project success.
