On the crystal structure of hollandite-like TlxV5S8. Evidence for one-dimensional cation order

Abstract

A single crystal structure refinement of Tl0.83V5S8 corroborates the centrosymmetric space group C2/m being most probable for TlV5S8 type phases. Diffuse X-ray scattering proves one-dimensional ordering of the thallium atoms within the not fully occupied channels of the structure. A model for the cation order based on a restricted, commensurate Frenkel-Kontorowa chain is proposed.
