Abstract
This thesis describes the development of sustainable freight transportation within the EU and wants to find out why freight transportation is increasing, how the EU is reacting, how different regulations are realized in Austria and Germany and what differences exist. Due to our globalizing world, rising long-distance freight transportation, smaller consignments and shorter product lifecycles the volume of freight transportation increases. This leads to air, water and noise pollution as well as landscape fragmentation, biodiversity losses and changing climate. Therefore, the EU developed regulations like Environmental Action Programs, trans-European transport networks, a Green Paper and the Transport White Paper. However, the realization in Austria and Germany is very similar. All in all, the EU is behind schedule regarding the achievement of set objectives towards sustainable freight transportation. Although the defined goals are very aspiring, they won’t be achieved unless further and stricter initiatives will be realized in the EU and its member states.
