    Abstract

Sustainable mobility is a truly relevant future topic, particularly for rural areas in Austria. Rural areas benefited considerably from the expansion of the road network. Because of the low population density and the effects of urban sprawl, public transport systems in rural areas are much more costly than they are in cities. The demographic ageing process poses a number of great challenges to rural areas. The insufficient cost coverage of the traditional line-based public transport system and people’s dependence on their own cars raise the question of alternative mobility solutions. An analysis of traffic behaviour and the existing range of public transport services in the “future region Eferding” – i.e. a cooperation of four adjacent communities – is conducted, allowing for conclusions to be drawn regarding opportunities for action and potential alternatives in the field of sustainable mobility solutions. Based on the analysis of existing sustainable mobility services for rural areas, opportunities for action in the “future region Eferding” will be raised, including strategies for improving car sharing services, the installation of flexible solutions for public transport, and the formation of carpooling systems.
