    Abstract

The ever invreasing volume of traffice and the environmental problems connected with it demand comprehensive concepts considering the running of the automobile as well as its continued use in the future. The development of alternative drive systems and regenerative fuels is an important step in the direction of breaking away from the unconditional dependence on oil and the vicious circle of the resulting ecological problems. Within the framework of this dissertation the possibilities are examined that might already today, by diminishing the dependency on oil, lead to a reduction of road traffic and pollution of the environment. The greater part of this work is taken up by evaluating in two different ways currently available and economically feasible alternative fuels and forms of drive systems. On the one hand the evaluation is done by means of a use-value-analysis enabling us to consider the economic criteria as well as criteria relating to ecological or technical aspects or the infrastructure. On the other hand a purely economic evaluation was done by means of a cost-use-analysis. With the use-value-analysis the aim is to show an inventory of the present situation as it is with “alternative drive systems from the view-point of environmentally sustainable traffic” and to present the matter in a clear and understandable form. When categorizing or evaluating the varying emissions while operating the drive the scientifically recognised CML method is used. Since this evaluation, by necessity, is partly arrived at from a subjective point of view, the cost-use-analysis is applied as a second method of evaluation. It is intended to demonstrate in this way the profitability of alternative drive systems in comparison to traditional systems. The final examination takes a closer look at the framework of the preconditions necessary for alternative fuels and drive systems to establish themselves on the domestic market.
