Abstract

Concurrent Engineering introduces new concepts like focusing on the product life-cycle, simultaneously developing product and process, and others in order to improve overall business effectiveness. Information technology is one key factor for the implementation of an integrated development and production environment, based on the integration of common tools and sharing of data. The development of large scale reference works for both, conventional printing as well as electronic delivery is taken as an example for identifying requirements and developing a fuctional architecture. A prototypical implementation of the main building blocks for cooperative publishing is presented.
