    Abstract

The reason for writing this thesis was the increasing importance of worldwide protection of commodities for companies. Over the next few years the worldwide shortage of resources will aggravate political, economical, structural and ecological problems. The cause of these problems is on the one hand the limitedness of commodities and on the other hand the increase of demand. This paper should help to reverse this trend by defining thirteen resources, analyzing them and developing strategies to optimize the resource input. From a company’s prospective it is important to analyze its use of resources systematically. In addition to this it’s important to shift the focus from waste management towards optimization of commodity input, recycling and substitution of critical resources. In other words companies which reduce their resource input will achieve more independence from developments at the worldwide commodity markets and in the long-run cost savings. In the end the overall aim is to uncouple economic growth form resource input.
