Abstract
E-learning-systems are using user models as a basis for capturing information about the learners progress and success in a specific topic. In particular, his information can be used to adapt the order of learning units - the learning sequence - to the user requirements. The better a learning system can adapt the learning process to different user requirements, the better the learning performance of students will be.
This thesis shows, which tasks a sequencing mechanism has to perform in a learning system and which approaches currently exist to implement them. The approach of adaptive hypermedia is compared with the sequencing & navigation specification introduced by SCORM®. It will be shown, how sequencing mechanisms possibly can be implemented in the Intelligent Tutorial System eTutor of the department for Data & Knowledge Engineering.
Furthermore this thesis describes how teachers can model a learning sequence, what concepts are useful for that task, and the way how the implemented sequencing mechanism of the eTutor can use that information and work with it.
