Abstract

On November 22, 1900, Maria Theresia Ledóchowska gave the closing speech at the 1st Austrian Anti-Slavery Congress in Vienna. In it, she essentially recapitulated her personal efforts for the mission in Africa and the fight against slavery - a dedication for which she was beatified in 1975. Ledóchowska never set foot in Africa, the continent to which she devoted all her energy. What did this Africa, for whose people Maria Theresa Ledóchowska fought, actually look like around 1900?
