Abstract
This disseration gives a survey of harmful substances in the ground water as a result of farming. The main focus is laid upon the contamination by nitrate caused by market gardening in the south of basin of Eferding.
The author compares different water laws which are relevant for agriculture in Central European Countries (the Switzerland, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate and Lower Saxony) to the Austrian legal requirement concerning water laws für Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Styria.
In addition, European laws for the protection of ground water are outlined and analysed as well as the Austrian "project for the preventive protection of ground water". The problems coming along with the translation into action are explained from the Austrian programme.
Finally, the author gives a short summary of the results of his research and suggests possible measures that farmers could take to protect ground water for a lasting conservation of it.
