    Abstract

Hospitals are on the one hand concerned with humans’ health, on the other hand, however, constitute an important ecological burden due to high standards and requirements in the health sector which in turn have negative effects on health. A minimization of these burdens in the medical sector is therefore required not only for environmental but also for health reasons. The aim of this thesis is the identification of possibilities of ecologically sustainable behaviour in hospitals while maintaining ideal health care. This was achieved by the analysis of legal, theoretical and practical aspects. The emphasis is placed on waste-, energy- and catering-management. Theoretical and legal aspects were gathered by literature research and research of legal regulations, the practical ones by interviewing experts from the hospitals SMZ Süd Vienna and BHS Linz as well as by analysing practice reports in the literature. The results have been summarized in a measure catalogue for each of the three focus areas.
