Abstract

A successful way to mechatronic design and, especially, to mechatronic modularization, which means the creation of units for which besides a functional interaction also show up a non-trivial spatial integration of components from different engineering fields, promises to be a rigorous functional decomposition (FD) of such systems. Spplying this FD-method to functionally very large and complex systems, like production plants or some heavy machinery, yields a clearly structured representation, but requires computer support for complexity. For this purpose a data bank system provides easy handling and adaptation of the user interfaces, the visualisation of the FD-structure, and good access, both, to project specific data and also to referenced overall information data. Because of the complexity of the interaction of several implemented functions in mechatronic ssytems, mathematical modelling is very usful. The role of mathematical models in conceptual design is to provide some coarse quantitative assessment of certain solution concepts, and furthermore, to clarify the relationship between the functional requirements and the design parameters.
