Abstract

This thesis deals with the realization of a software system, which assists the workflows of forensic DNA-analysis. This system, named Dimensions, is a full redesign of an existing program. The beginning of this work introduces the company, which ordered this software. It also describes the project schedule, which already existed when the project was started. The next chapter is about the initial situation explaining the features of the old application. It also contains the desicion, why the new system is a full redesign and not an enhanced version ofthe existing program. Dimensions was implemented with the new .Net technology from Microsoft. The next chapter introduces the benefits of this technology. It also compares .Net with the Javatechnology for a better understanding of these two ttechnologies. Chapter 4 is about the biological background of the forensic DNA-analysis. It decribes different methods used for separating profiles. Later an example based on the CODIS system illustrates the inheritance of DNA-fragements. Afterwards a discussion about ethical questions follows. The next chapter explains the workflow of Dimensions. The beginning introduces the basics of modelling workflows with the ADONIS toolkit. After this introduction a detailed explanation of the operation of Dimensions with some background information from the implementation is given. The next pages present possible additional features of Dimensions. It also explains some problems of the final version. Technical details of the implementation are described in chapter 7. It represents only a subset of all the modules. These subset are for example the database model, the ABI-file, support for multilingual user interfaces, the license system and the generation of the barcode structure. The last chapter of this thesis describes different testing methods used for Dimensions. To ensure a correct functioning of the system, three testing methods where used: a File-Imp
