Abstract
This master thesis was created due to a cooperation of the company SML and the
"Institute of Polymer Extrusion and Compounding" at the Johannes Kepler University in
Linz and deals with the classification, the causes, the origin and the prevention of local
film defects. It specially deals with polyolefin based films which are manufactured with a
flat- or cast-film line. The whole process has been divided into five sections from the raw
material to the finished product. In each section all included components are discussed in
terms of relevance for film defects.
For the master thesis experiments were carried out by an existing plant, which should
show the influence of the raw material, of the edge trim recycling and of the melt
filtration. For continues control of the film quality, this plant has his own optical control
system, which was used to analyse the realized tests.
