    Abstract

For the realisation of environment-measures, the cooperation of all employees is necessary. The staff hast to be motivated. Therefore lots of different possibilities exist. It always depends on the working habits, if the employees can be better motivated by material or immaterial incentives. Protection of the environment should not be seen as an imposition but as a chance to safe nature. Due to the wide range of attitudes towards environment protection the incentive system has to meet the needs of the employees. The extension and the effectiveness of some incentive systems have been analyzed in “EMAS” validated companies in Austria. The most popular measures to sensitise employees for the protection of the environment are to supply special information and training to the staff. This provides the basic knowledge which is a need for fully understanding the problem. Also placing more responsibility on the company employees and one-on-one interviews are often exercised methods to ensure the increased awareness of active environmental protection. Generally the companies are willing to make an effort in establishing incentive systems for their staff to keep environmental protection on a high level.
