Abstract

This paper describes a model for stepwise transition to reuse-oriented software development. This Reuse Capability Maturity Model (RCMM) begins with the ad hoc reuse of software components, as we see in practice, and defines three phases for the integration of component reuse into the software process: (i) systematization of the reuse of available software, (ii) directing of software development to application domains, and (iii) Reuse-oriented product development as the enterprise strategy. RCMM not only shows a way for stepwise improvment of reuse, it also provides a basis for identifying and assessing the available potential for enhancing productivity and quality in software development. In addition to the description of RCMM, the paper contains an activity model, Reuse Capability Assissment Model (RCAM), for determining the actual reuse maturity. A report on experience in the use of the models rounds out the paper.
