Abstract
The focus of this diploma thesis lies on the role of primary schools in integrating the sustainability approach in human consciousness and action, in order to generate a society with sustainable living standard. Severe behavioral changes seem indispensable for a transition towards a sustainable society. An important institution which builds the foundation of our socialization through awareness- and value raising is the primary school, which provides a great potential for the state to influence and shape the society. The research focuses on the question to what extent the potential for sustainable education has already been exhausted and how pupils are being influenced concerning this matter. For this purpose a closer look was taken at the teaching content on the subject of sustainability as defined in the syllabus and provided by the public sector through school books. Furthermore the research demonstrates the requirements for successful implementation of sustainable lifestyle, what school books in primary schools already accomplish for this purpose and what they could achieve in future.
