Abstract

The subject of the thesis is the mathematical modelling of the transport of particles in a shock absorber system. The shock absorber system consists of two chambers, which are connected by a tube. During the so called "suck in - phase", filtered air is pumped through a valve into the whole system. During the so called "suck out ? phase" the same amount of air leaves the whole system. In the actual design of the shock absorber system, one of the chambers is separated by walls into some more smaller chambers. The problem, we are dealing with, is caused by some small aluminium particles, that are arisen in the assembling of the whole appliance. These dusty particles are able to block the valve. In addition to the aluminium particles, there is another source, which produces continuously small dusty particles, which can also block the valve. We will call the case of blocking the valve a failure. Besides the modelling of the movement of the particles through the system, we estimated the probability of a failure. The movement of the particles was modeled with the help of a random walk (continuous and discrete time Markov chains), where the transition probabilities were computed expicitly.
