Abstract

The energy transfer process within the isolated B800-850 pigment-protein complex of purple bacteria Rhodobacter sphaeroides has been studied by means of spectral hole-burning. The widths of the holes burnt in the BChl 800 band are independent of wavelength and of temperature between 1.2 and 30K. From the holewidth, an energy transfer time for BChl 800 <-- BChl 850 of 2.3ps has been obtained for both the isolated complex, and for the chromatophore at 1.2K.
