Abstract

The increasing quality standard in steel industry makes it necessary to take actions to fulfill the quality level requested by the customer. In important quality index for steel coils is their ellipticity of the time of shipping. The ellipticity is estimated using elliptic curve segments, which are extracted from raw gray scale images of the coils. In this paper the estimation of the ellipticity of coils is discussed. Therefore the image acquisition setup is described. Further the concept of the algorithm is described. The estimated ellipticities are compared to a physical model of the coil ellipticity. Finally some proposals for further improvements are discussed.
