Abstract

Business intelligence is an important tool for strategic planning in numerous companies. Particularly in a competitive marketplace, a successful business intelligence system gives a company an advantage over its competitors. Since companies often do not have the necessary know-how for an implementation of a business intelligence solution, they often fall back on the support of external consultants. The cooperation with the consultants is mainly based on high-quality communication, which contributes significantly to the success of the implementation in the company. This work deals with the communication between the companies and the external consultants. With the help of a qualitative study it has been examined which points are considered particularly important on the side of the companies as well as on the side of the consultants and which factors can be considered problematic. Interviews with companies that have a current business intelligence implementation project allowed a more exact analysis of the factors in the communication process that affect the success of the implementation. On the other hand, interviews have been conducted with consultants in order to incorporate their views on collaboration in business intelligence projects. Finally, the insights gained from the literature have been compared with empirical findings and the relevant points that influence and shape the communication process between companies and external consultants have been be described.
