Abstract

Object-oriented technology has established itself as a new paradigm in software development in the last years. As a result, many enterprises hope to achieve higher quality levels for their software products as well as higher productivity and efficiency within their development teams by using object-oriented technology. These enterprises are therefore willing to start or have already started the transition from conventional to object-oriented software development. This transition must be well planned and prepared as numerous difficult decisions and problems arise during this process. In the present work a model for the transition from conventional to object-oriented software development, which supports the planning and designing of the transition process to avoid or at least cope with the most common and serious problems, is developed and described. The foundation for the development of the transition model originates from the following areas: * technology management * organizational research (particularly organizational change) * existing approaches and models for the transition from conventional to object-oriented software development The model describes a rough framework for the transition process, important organizational roles during this process as well as the importance of information and communication, participation and further education and training for the acceptance of the necessary changes. The development of the model is supported by an empirical study using qualitative methods. The underlying research strategy is the comparative case study approach. The development of the model for the transition from conventional to object-oriented software development starts with a first version of the model (called the conceptual framework for the study) which is then further developed and refined during the research process.
