Digital Twin Architecture Patterns for Real-Time Control Systems

Abstract

Digital Twins (DTs) have become an emerging topic of research in the manufacturing and production domain. DTs are integrated into existing manufacturing systems to monitor, control, and optimize production processes. This in turn influences the requirements for system integration and logical system architecture. A better understanding of the relationship between the existing Real-Time (RT) process control systems and DTs can boost the adoption of DTs in the manufacturing industry. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate possible interaction patterns of DTs with RT process control systems and define four use case categories for using DTs, i.e., observing, operating, controlling, and engineering a manufacturing system.
