Digital Fluid Power applied to a Pneumatic Force Control System

Abstract

Digital fluid power in the sense of replacing traditional resistance or displacement control by digital components, either in the form of pulse-width modulated fast switching valves or binary coded parallel valve arrangements have drawn growing attention in the hydraulic control community over the last years. In the pneumatics industry, the application of digital fluid power concepts is limited to a rather small number of applications like piloted pressure control valves with two fast on/off valves in the pilot circuit. The research presented in this paper aims at a fast and precise force control system for a simple pneumatic actuator. A test rig containing a bellows cylinder and two fast switching valves with a switching time slightly below 1 ms is used to demonstrate the potential for cost-effective, yet very accurate pressure control.
